The development of a healthy digestive system begins very soon after birth. When the foal drinks its first colostrum, the first antibodies enter the blood and the first bacteria enter the gut, where “good” bacteria will be allowed to settle. These are known as gut flora or the gut microbiome.

The bacteria reach the intestines through the mother’s milk or by eating manure. The microflora must first be recognized by the intestinal immune system so it can be clearly distinguished from pathogenic bacteria in the gut.
